At LAS, we prioritize the mental health and well-being of our students. Our Social Emotional Counselor is here to provide support, guidance, and resources to help students navigate the challenges of high school life. Whether it's through one-on-one counseling sessions, group workshops, or wellness activities, our counselor fosters a safe and welcoming environment where students can express their feelings, develop coping strategies, and enhance their emotional resilience.
In partnership with families and communities, schools play a critical role in supporting the social and emotional development of youth. This goes beyond teaching a set of skills by embedding social and emotional learning (SEL) into every aspect of daily school life. Students will participate in weekly lessons from RULER and will work with their classroom teachers to link this learning to the content.
RULER, an acronym for the five skills of emotional intelligence (recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating) is the evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence (YCEI). More than 20 years of research shows that SEL helps students achieve more academically and make better decisions. Read some of the research here.
RULER is a systemic approach to SEL developed at the YCEI that supports school communities to understand the value of emotions, build the skills of emotional intelligence, and create and maintain positive emotional climates with RULER.
